DMP MUSIC, also known as Digital Music Products of Stamford, CT, USA was an audiophile record label committed to publishing music software of the highest caliber - both in terms of performance and sound reproduction. All DMP titles are no longer in print.
Founded in 1984, the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra (SJO) has developed into one of Europe's most prominent jazz big bands. Led by Musical Director Fredrik Noren, the group has toured Europe and recorded with some of today's leaders in jazz, including Bob Mintzer, Bob Brookmeyer, Bill Holman, Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely. With the release of "Tango" on DMP, the SJO is destined to get the international recognition it so richly deserves.
"Tango" was conceived by Argentinean trumpeter Gustavo Bergalli, who is no stranger to the tango style music of Buenos Aires that originated at the beginning of the 20th century. Bergalli knew that tango music arranged for a jazz orchestra with jazz soloists would result in a uniquely accessible sound. The concept was presented to both Fredrik Noren and the esteemed arranger composer Carlos Franzetti, both of whom Bergalli had worked with in the past. Adding to the authenticity of the project was the introduction of the bandoneon, an instrument specifically used in tango music, played here by the world famous Juan-Jose Mosalini.
"Perhaps the most important thing that I kept in mind when writing these arrangements was to keep the essence of tango and translate this visceral experience into another dimension," explained Carlos Franzetti. Well known tangos performed for this recording include Revolucionario, La Ultima Curda, and Nostalgico. Franzetti also penned three powerful original compositions in Capicua, Milonga Rea and Tango Fatal that complete a unique and dynamic program.
This is the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra's salute to tango, which demonstrates, once again, that the only boundaries in jazz are theoretical. This is a superb group of musicians, and arranger Carlos Franzetti has managed to evoke the classic, sinuous rhythms of tango with soulful, atmospheric jazz arrangements that suggest a deep admiration for Gil Evans. "La Ultima Curda" is especially reminiscent of Evans' legendary Sketches of Spain collaboration with Miles Davis. While the inclusion of the traditional, accordion-like bandoneon adds authentic flavor and two compositions -- the powerful "Revolutionario" and the haunting ballad "Chiquilin de Bachine" -- by tango legend Astor Piazzolla are represented, the overall sound is pure big-band jazz. And very good jazz at that: The arrangements move, change, and build, with ever-flowing lines, interesting tempo changes, and a variety of solo textures. The trumpet solos by Argentinian Gustavo Bergalli, which are featured throughout, are superb. The music conveys the teasing mystery of tango expressed through the sophisticated language of jazz. The SACD is also very crisply recorded in every blazing detail, using DSD technology. Lush, luscious, and unusual.
"Tango" was recorded live to 2-track at Swedish Radio in Stockholm by Tom Jung using a new recording process called Direct Stream Digitaltm. DSDtm is a high resolution system developed by Sony and Philips that delivers a more inviting listening experience with improved depth and realism. While the DSD's superior sound will be best realized with the Super Audio CD (SACD), much of the added resolution is retained on this recording through an elaborate multi-bit rendering process creating a standard 16-Bit/44-kHz compact disc.
Introducing Super Audio CD:
It looks like a CD and it plays in all existing CD players, but this hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) is much, much more. Created by Sony and Philips - the people who invented CD - this is actually a two layered disc. First is a reflective CD layer that assures backward compatibility with nearly 600 million CD players worldwide. Second is a semi-transmissive high-density layer, which can be read by a new generation of Super Audio CD players. It represents a new, altogether different way to produce music. An even better CD.
