Alex Katz is 89 and has been painting, sculpting and making prints since the 1950s. He developed his signature style early on, and his work is easy to identify with its boldly reductive portraits and colorful, desolate landscapes.

Throughout his long career he has collaborated with writers and poets and other artists. Now he has teamed up with H&M on the Fashion Loves Art collection – a range of garments for both ladies and men, as well as home décor.

Katz is one of America's leading painters. His work has been the subject of nearly 200 solo exhibitions since 1954. His portraits and landscapes capture American life in a flat, elegant and realistic style all his own. Now 83, Katz is receiving increased attention with recent solo exhibitions in Milan, Paris, Finland, Grenoble and New York.

Katz is best known for his images of individuals and groups, usually portrayed in social gatherings, that evoke a fashionable moneyed mileau and are rendered in a cool flattened style. His paintings are marked by a simplified line that emphasizes forms and colors set against flat backgrounds. He began making figurative paintings in the late 1950's when their iconic quality and emotional distance was totally against the grain of the emotionally heightened and gestural works of the Abstract Expressionists. In the late 1950's he also made his first lino and woodcuts, beginning a life-long interest in printmaking.

In 1986 the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY mounted a major retrospective of his work and he was also shown at P.S.1, Museum, NY in 1998. His work is held in major American museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum, NY and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, and also the Tate Gallery, London, UK.
