They can be used for clothing, quilting,scrap booking, home decoration, or just about anything you can come up with. They can be affixed to almost anything that can take the heat from the iron without sustaining damage. Appliques can even be added to paper using glue, or sewn onto certain materials, so this decorating concept is not limited to the iron-on technique. In addition, for special items meant to last for a very long time, such as quilts, ironing on the patch and then reinforcing with a few stitches is an effective way to ensure permanent placement. If you have never tried ironing on a patch or applique before, it may be a good idea to buy an inexpensive iron-on patch to practice with. This is a good way to get a feel for the process before moving on to more important projects. Ironing on appliques and embroidered patches is not a difficult technique; with just a bit of patience and some knowledge about what works best with various materials and patch sizes, it can be easily mastered. General Guidelines: Most iron-on patches can be safely washed and dried when applied properly. However, items that require frequent hot water washing will last longer if the patch is also sewn after ironing. In general, patches cannot be ironed onto waterproof rain gear, elastic, leather, nylon, or rayon. If you aren't sure whether a particular fabric will take the ironing-on process, test first on a hidden seam or hem to see whether the heat from the iron causes any damage. The best fabrics for iron-on appliques are cotton and polyester fiber blends. If there is any question, consider sewing or gluing the patch on instead. Always wash a garment with an applique or embroidered patch inside out. Do not use hot water or the high heat setting on a dryer, because heat might loosen the patch. You might be able to re-iron loosened patches, but more often, these will require the application of fabric glue. Always iron a patch onto one layer of fabric. If you must iron through two layers of fabric (such as the leg of a pair of jeans), put a clean cloth between the layers to prevent glue from passing through to the other side and bonding the two layers of fabric together. If the fabric feels stiff, pre-wash it; sizing, which is a stiffener, may interfere with proper adhesion of the glue. Finally, do not attempt to iron leather or vinyl of any kind. These fabrics are not designed to withstand the kind of heat needed for an applique. Use fabric glue or stitching instead. Instructions for how to iron on patches: Heat seal appliques are easy to complete on a garment, tote bag, place mats, sheets, etc. (1) Preheat iron to "cotton" setting. DO NOT USE STEAM DURING APPLICATION. (2) Position design and cover with thin pressing cloth. (3) Press straight down with constant pressure for 25 seconds. DO NOT IRON BACK AND FORTH. (4) Allow to cool thoroughly before using. Heat seal to cotton and cotton polyester fabrics. DO NOT APPLY TO RAYON, NYLON OR TRI ACETATE FABRICS. These designs are machine washable and dry cleanable.
