Printed porcelain plate multiple from the 1999 Peter Norton Family Christmas Project. Edition size: 5000, unsigned and unnumbered. Manufactured by Bernardaud, Limoges, France. Dimensions: 12-1/2" (32 cm). BRAND NEW / Mint condition in original foam-lined cardboard shipping box.

This plate interprets Caravaggio's 'Medusa' (1590), a mythological figure from the ancient Mediterranean world whose frightening demeanor symbolized both repulsion and protection, in marinara sauce and pasta. In 1999 Vik Muniz was commissioned to design a Peter Norton Family Christmas Project present produced by Bernardaud in Limoges, France.

Each year since 1988, art patron and software entrepreneur, Peter Norton has commissioned an art edition to celebrate the Christmas season and holidays. Created by artists represented in the Nortons' own collection, and sent as presents to personal friends and members of the art community, these art objects are designed to be interactive and playful, and to foster engagement with the world of contemporary art.

Peanut butter and jam, chocolate, sugar, wire, dirt and diamonds are just a few of the astonishing range of materials used by artist Vik Muñiz in the images he produces and then photographs. Since the mid-1990s, Brazilian artist Vik Muñiz has earned an international reputation for the photographic pieces he creates out of everyday materials. These images, inspired by current events, art history or famous figures, are familiar yet enigmatic. Initially taking the form of witty visual statements, his works question the way visual information is constructed, presented and then perceived by the viewer.

Since 1989, Muñiz has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions in highly prestigious institutions in New York, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Houston, Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Madrid and Dublin. He took part in the 24th Bienal de São Paulo in 1998, and represented Brazil at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. He now divides his time between Rio de Janeiro and New York.

Muñiz’ "illusions" have won over critics and public alike. Time Magazine rated the artist as one of the “Leaders of the New Millennium” and The New York Times recommended his work as a sure-fire antidepressant, describing it as “an idea wrapped up in surprise and laughter”!
