About the Artwork

Conceived in shades of black, Odilon Redon's early works, his so-called noirs, were an exploration of the of artist's own psyche; a quest to place "the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible." Described as a "synthesis of dreams and nightmares," they were often monstrous and baroque, but The Book of Light follows a separate, spiritual thread that would come to fruition in his later work. In his post-noir period Redon would go on to produce a series of pastel portraits of introspective subjects dissolving into vivid, dreamlike environments. Looking into themselves, they behold a universe unfolding; gazing outward, they find their own souls reflected back at them. In The Book of Light, likewise, the book is not an independent fount of inspiration, but a mirror that conducts the light of the woman's heart onto her face, so that she may discover it within herself.
