How to make a Fabric and Cotton Webbing Key Fob Hardware Wristlet:

You will need:

Supplies:

  • 1.25" (32 mm) Key Fob Hardware
  • 11"x2.25" Fabric strip (of your choosing)
  • 1.25” Cotton Webbing)
  • Coordinating color thread
  • Heat N Bond or Fusible Tape
  • Fray Check

Instructions (adjust accordingly for 1" hardware):

1.    Cut a 11" section of Cotton Webbing and Fabric strip. Create a 11"x1.25" strip of Fabric and a 11"x1" strip of Heat N Bond.

2.    I made a template out of chipboard that was 12"x1.25" to help me achieve a consistent size and look. Fold in and iron the fabric to 1.25" wide.

3.  Center and iron Heat N Bond to the underside of the Fabric strip.

4.  Remove Heat N Bond backing and turn finished Fabric Strip right side up and iron to Cotton Webbing making sure to center it.

5.  Stitch along the edge of your Fabric strip, securing the edge onto the webbing.  Work slowly, keeping close to the edge.  Go the whole length on both sides.

6.  Fold the Cotton Webbing in half, right sides facing out and match up the ends.  Secure with Sewing Clips and stitch the ends together with a zigzag stitch.  Trim any loose threads and lightly coat the end in Fray Stop or equivalent liquid to help resist fraying over time.

7.  Tuck the sewn seam ends into the Key Fob Hardware, making sure that the Cotton Webbing is in there evenly and not hanging out one end or the other.

8.  Using your Key Fob Hardware pliers squeeze the Key Fob Hardware closed a little at a time.  I like to go back and forth a couple times so that I don't over-crimp one side too much.

9.  Add the Key Ring and Yay!!! You are done.  Good Job!!!

▶▶Key Fob Hardware Sewing Tips:

Tip #1: Before crimping the key fob hardware in place, sew the folded ends of the wristlet together with a 1/4-inch seam or a tight zigzag stitch. I, personally, use a zig-zag stitch because it creates a good firm hold.

Tip #2: The teeth in the Key Fob Hardware must be embedded in the wristlet fabric. If they aren't, the wristlet can pull out of the hardware. You will need to use good firm pressure.

Tip #3: If the teeth are not securely embedding into your wristlet material, it may be because the material or wristlet is too thick or too dense for the teeth to puncture effectively. If this is the case, consider reducing the thickness or amount of material used in your wristlet or choosing an alternative fabric. Key Fob Hardware is not a one-size-fits-all product—it is specifically designed to be used with cotton webbing or standard fabric materials for best results.

Tip #4: Apply Fray Check on raw edges of your fabric wristlet to keep it from unraveling inside the hardware.

Tip #5: Want to avoid breaking your nails when opening Split Rings? Use a staple remover. Sink its fangs between the main part of the key ring & the open end. It will open easily.

Tip #6: Add Flair: Attach a cover button pendant to the key ring for a more polished look, but don’t stop there—add a lobster clasp or shaped split ring for even more pizzazz.

Tip #7: Mix Materials: Pair cotton webbing with a fabric strip or ribbon for texture and extra charm.

Tip #8: Use Key Fob Pliers to close the Key Fob Hardware by going back and forth, adding a little bit of pressure to each side until the clamp eases together.
