The 1988 U.S. Open was the 88th U.S. Open. The golf tournament was held June 1988, at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Curtis Strange defeated Nick Faldo in an 18-hole playoff for his first U.S. Open title.
Curtis Strange took the 54-hole lead after a third-round 69, while Nick Faldo was a stroke behind after a 68. Strange and Faldo battled back-and-forth during the final round, with Strange getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the 18th to tie Faldo and force a playoff. In the playoff, Strange took an one-stroke lead at the turn after birdies at the 4th and 7th. When Faldo bogeyed the 11th Strange took a two-shot lead, but he then bogeyed the next hole to see his lead again fall to one. Strange, however, took a commanding three-shot lead at the 13th with a birdie combined with a Faldo bogey. Faldo bogeyed three of his last four holes to card a 75, while Strange finished with a 71 and a four-stroke victory.
