This program is a great companion to our DM&IR Yellowstones-Giants of Steam. It has many things in it not seen in the other, which makes both videos great to own. The new DM&IR Steam Variety has many scenes of Proctor Engine terminal as well as Two Harbors terminal. Yes, there is plenty of 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone footage, and besides the ore hauling, we see them performing ore-thawing service, and in some late steam-era excursion service as well. Besides the big Yellowstones we also see a variety of other DM&IR steam engines including switching duties with ex-Bessemer engines and DM&IR power. We will see the well-proportioned 2-10-4's and other locos moving about the yard areas too.

This footage is all 16mm film originals, and shot by Perry Becker of Minnesota. We have also included a few minutes of the nearby shortline Duluth and Northeastern Railway, that was shot by Maynard Laing during the same period as the Becker Films. All of the films have sound added by us. As with most films there was none that was shot on the film. However, we used audio that we had from 1958-59 visits recorded by Elwin Purington, that we also used on the DM&IR Yellowstones video. All the audio on this Steam Variety program that shows Yellowstones, has Authentic Yellowstone audio with those scenes. Other locomotives may not be authentic to their classes, but in most cases the scenes don't matter that much, since they are slow switching moves. The Duluth and North Eastern Audio is authentic also, since it was recorded about the time they were there.

As mentioned there are few excursion scenes shown, including one in 1961 which had two Yellowstones running on two separate excursions on the exact same day. One was from Two Harbors and one from Duluth. We see shots from both, which had Yellowstones 224 and 225 on the different excursion trains.

This program is slightly longer than the first one we did, thus is $5.00 more in cost. I think both this one and the DM&IR Yellowstones-Giants of Steam should be in all steam fan collections, especially those that enjoy big vintage steam power.

Almost all of the DVD's we carry are NOT regionally encoded (sometimes refered as Region Code 0) which means they will play in any DVD player in the world that is capable of NTSC format. Many DVD players found in countries that use PAL format can also play NTSC format as well.
