____________________________________ Jade Information:
The gemstone known as Jade is actually two different mineral species: Nephrite (soft) and Jadeite (hard) which can both be properly called Jade. The history of Jade is said to be as long as the Chinese civilization. Jade objects have been identified from the early Neolithic period – about 5000 BC. In the past, Jade was made into sacrificial vessels, tools, ornaments, utensils and many other items as well as frequently buried with the dead. In China, Jade stands for beauty, grace and purity and has been used in many Chinese idioms or phrases to denoting beautiful things and people. There is a Chinese saying about Jade: Gold has a value; Jade is invaluable. Jade is the gemstone for the 12th, 30th and 35th wedding anniversaries. Jade is 6.0-6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is the state gemstone for both Alaska and Wyoming. Colors and Sources: Jade is found in a wide range of colors with many distinctive names given to subtle shades of coloring. Jade can be almost black, blue, golden brown, green, grey, lavender, red, russet yellow and white to name a few. Some pieces have veins of other colors with many descriptive names applied.
