Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Renfrew's study of where the Indo-European languages came from, combining historical linguistics with processual archaeology. Against the long-held view that Kurgan horsemen from the Russian steppes carried the languages into Europe in the Bronze Age, he argues that early forms of Indo-European spread from Anatolia with the first farmers, around 7000-6500 BC, and that there was no "coming of the Celts." The book set out what became known as the Anatolian hypothesis, still debated today. Renfrew (1937-2024) was Disney Professor of Archaeology and Master of Jesus College, Cambridge. Illustrated with plates of the Hittite King's Gate at Boghazkoy, Tocharian documents collected by Aurel Stein, Catal Huyuk, Mohenjodaro sealstones and the Birdlip mirror, together with maps and language family trees.
