a Vintage American Paul Volckening (1928-2016)

pot vase. Round in shape, heavy stoneware body,

wheel thrown, glazed with an abstract calligraphic

design all the way around with an unglazed foot.

Signed Paul Volckening in a glaze script.

Circa 1950's. Made in USA.

Paul Volckening is considered an important potter of the

American Studio Pottery Movement. He was born in Mineola,

New York on January 20, 1928 and passed back in 2016.

He received his B.A. from the California College of Arts and

Crafts in Oakland, Ca., and his M.A. from Mills College. A

Fulbright grant took him to Finland in 1958 where he worked

in the Helsinki Arabia Factory. He was an important part of the

art department at New Mexico Highlands University in the 1960's

where he taught pottery. Paul made pottery on the West Coast

and finally in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
