An impressive vintage Chinese carved wooden horse statue, finished in a rich distressed gilt/gold colour and inspired by the celebrated horse sculptures of China’s Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).
Please note that this is a later decorative piece in Tang Dynasty style, rather than an ancient Tang-period artefact.
The horse is depicted in a characterful standing pose with its head lowered and one front leg raised. It has a strongly stylised arched neck, cropped mane and elaborate tack, including a sculpted saddle, bridle, breast straps and decorative harness ornaments.
The gilt finish has been deliberately aged/distressed, with areas of darker and reddish undercolour showing through. This gives the piece an attractive antiqued appearance and emphasises the carved details.
Mounted securely on a substantial dark red/burgundy rectangular wooden plinth, making it a striking freestanding decorative piece.
Approximate Measurements
13 inches high x 13 inches long
(approx. 33 x 33 cm)
Condition
Vintage/pre-owned condition with surface wear, rubbing, marks and losses to the gilt finish, particularly around raised areas and extremities. There is also general age-related wear to the base.
Much of this variation contributes to the intentionally aged appearance of the piece. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
About the Style
Horses held considerable importance during the Tang Dynasty and became one of the most recognisable subjects in Chinese art. Tang-period ceramic horses are particularly celebrated for their powerful bodies, arched necks and elaborate saddlery. This later wooden interpretation draws heavily upon that distinctive aesthetic.
A substantial and highly decorative piece, ideal for a Chinese or Asian-inspired interior, study, library, hallway or collection of equestrian art.
