Antique George Cartlidge? Sherwin & Cotton Green Glazed Relief Tile C1900 Rare
Description
Antique Victorian / Edwardian Green Glazed Photographic Relief Tile – Attributed to George Cartlidge for Sherwin & Cotton – Circa 1900
A beautiful and unusual antique ceramic relief tile, believed to be the work of renowned British ceramic artist George Cartlidge (1868–1961), possibly produced for Sherwin & Cotton of Hanley, Staffordshire, around the turn of the 20th century.
This fascinating tile features a wonderfully detailed, almost photographic image of a seated working man wearing a traditional flat cap, waistcoat, rolled-up sleeves and boots, with a bucket beside him and a rustic workshop or yard setting in the background.
The image is beautifully rendered in shallow relief beneath a rich, translucent green glaze, creating remarkable depth, shading and an almost photographic appearance.
The tile has an attractive raised border, with darker green shading around the edges, framing the central scene.
George Cartlidge & Sherwin & Cotton
George Cartlidge was a British ceramic artist particularly celebrated for his innovative photographic relief tiles, produced during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
His work is closely associated with the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Sherwin & Cotton.
Cartlidge became known for his use of the émaux ombrants technique, in which a moulded ceramic image was covered with translucent glaze, allowing variations in the depth of the relief to create subtle tonal differences and an exceptionally detailed, photographic effect.
These distinctive tiles are now sought after by collectors of Victorian ceramics, British art pottery and decorative architectural tiles.
The style, subject matter, rich green glaze and photographic relief of this example appear consistent with his work.
Maker’s Mark
The reverse is finished in a matching green glaze and features a small raised capital letter H moulded into the ceramic.
The significance of this mark has not been established. It may represent a mould, factory or production identification mark.
Measurements
Approximately 6 inches square (15 cm x 15 cm).
Condition
Good original antique condition, displaying genuine age-related wear and character.
The tile retains its beautiful deep green glaze, with attractive age-related crazing visible across the surface.
There are some small chips, minor surface marks and areas of glaze wear, particularly around the edges and corners.
There is also a small area of glaze loss to the face of the seated figure.
Despite these imperfections, the detailed relief remains clearly visible, and the tile displays beautifully.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Important Information Regarding Attribution
Please note that I am not an expert in antique ceramics or Victorian tiles.
Having researched this piece, I believe it may be an example of George Cartlidge’s photographic relief work for Sherwin & Cotton, dating from approximately 1900.
The distinctive green translucent glaze, photographic-style relief and overall appearance seem consistent with examples attributed to this maker.
However, I have been unable to confirm the attribution definitively, and the raised H on the reverse has not been positively identified as a manufacturer’s mark.
The tile is therefore offered as attributed to George Cartlidge / Sherwin & Cotton, rather than as a guaranteed example.
I would encourage prospective buyers, particularly knowledgeable collectors and specialists, to study the photographs carefully, carry out their own research and make up their own minds regarding the maker, age and attribution.
