The SS Corinthian was a 6,227-ton steel steamship built by Workman, Clark & Co. in Belfast for the Allan Line.
Launched in 1900, she began her maiden voyage on May 24, 1900, traveling from Liverpool to Québec and Montréal.
Routes: She initially carried first-, second-, and third-class passengers before being refitted in 1908 to carry only second and third class. She later shifted to London-Canada sailings and the Glasgow-Canada route.
World War I: During World War I, she served as a troopship for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Most users on the Great War Forum agree that her final post-armistice voyage in December 1918 from St. John, New Brunswick, to Great Britain carried commercial foodstuffs like bacon, beef, and flour to help ease wartime shortages rather than serving as a troop transport.Fate: On December 14, 1918, while traveling from St. John to Glasgow with general cargo, the ship ran aground off the northwest ledge of Brier Island in the Bay of Fundy. There were no casualties, but salvage attempts failed and she was declared a total loss.
