Beautiful antique c. 1900 pendant necklace dating to the turn of the 20th century. This striking piece features a rich cobalt blue domed celluloid centerpiece with an ornate applied metal decoration, surrounded by an intricately worked silver-tone floral and foliate frame.
Several construction details support the c. 1900 dating, including the early celluloid component, short 14” necklace length, aged base-metal construction, delicate period floral ornamentation, and particularly the unusual early clasp. Together, these characteristics are consistent with jewelry produced during the late Victorian into early Edwardian period.
The pendant has wonderful depth and texture, with flowers, leaves and berries worked throughout the surrounding metal frame. The cobalt blue center provides a gorgeous contrast against the naturally aged silver-tone metal. The original patina has been retained.
Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate wear. There is some tone/finish loss to the backside of the pendant, consistent with its age, and the applied metal centerpiece is slightly crooked. Please review photos closely for condition. Original patina and signs of age have been left intact.
Length: 14”
A beautiful and unusual surviving example of early costume jewelry, with loads of turn-of-the-century character and a wonderfully romantic antique look.
