A glamorous antique gilt metal hair barrette in a lavish Rococo Revival style, dating from around 1890-1910. It is richly decorated with scrolling foliage, beaded details and a finely textured rectangular centre panel. To the reverse is a long sprung clasp with a rotating toothed rod, released by pressing a small lever. It still works well and grips securely when closed. In the late Victorian to Edwardian era such barrettes would would have been worn to secure a gathered section of hair in the huge piled-up styles of the day, giving a point of glitter and sparkle.
