Vintage Steiff Black Tom Cat

 

Description

Original vintage Steiff Black Tom Cat, made in Germany in black velvet and measuring approximately 10 cm high.

This stylised standing cat was produced in the 10 cm size under several successive article numbers, including 7410, 7410,00 and later 2860/10. As the original yellow flag is no longer present, the precise production period cannot be narrowed beyond the documented overall range of approximately 1950–1973.

The cat has Steiff’s characteristic strongly arched back, long fixed legs, large upright mohair tail, green glass eyes, stitched facial features and surviving whiskers. The cat is non-jointed.

The original Steiff Button in Ear remains present.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. The velvet shows minor rubbing and surface marking but retains good depth of colour. The mohair tail is full and attractive. The eyes remain secure, and a good proportion of the whiskers survive. The original ribbon is worn and frayed. The Steiff button remains present; the yellow manufacturer's flag and chest tag are absent.
