Original vintage Mothers Pride bread wrapping roll with its original supplier’s cardboard carton, believed to date from the late 1960s.
A very unusual surviving piece of British bakery, advertising and packaging history. This is a substantial part-used roll of original printed Mothers Pride waxed bread wrapping, rather than a single loose bread wrapper.
The wrapping is printed in blue with the familiar:
MOTHERS PRIDE THICK SLICED PERFECT FOR TOAST
The original trade carton is marked:
Mothers Pride – Thick Sliced 1/10d – Perfect for Toast – Ptd Blue Ref: MP 103-12.U 355 mm Lustrawaxed Breadwrapping
The carton identifies the manufacturer as The Robinson Waxed Paper Company Limited, Filwood Road, Fishponds, Bristol BS16 3RY, and is addressed to:
Price & Co. (Bakers) Chaucer Road Forest Gate London E7
The printed retail price of 1/10d (one shilling and tenpence) dates the packaging to Britain’s pre-decimal period. From the style and information present, it is believed to date from approximately the late 1960s, although an exact production date has not been established.
The roll appears to have been part-used, suggesting that it may have been working bakery packaging stock rather than an unused display/sample item.
Condition
This is an original commercial item that is approximately 55–60 years old and has age and storage-related wear.
Please note that there is a slit/cut through part of the wrapping roll. From its position and appearance, this may have occurred when the cardboard outer carton was opened with a blade, although the exact cause cannot be confirmed. Please examine the photographs carefully for the location and extent of this damage.
The original cardboard carton also shows considerable age-related wear, including marks, staining, creasing, scuffs and general storage wear, as would be expected from old industrial packaging.
The roll is not being described as unused or mint. It appears part-used and is being sold exactly as found, together with its original carton.
Despite the condition, it is unusual to find original Mothers Pride commercial bread wrapping surviving in this form, particularly a substantial roll accompanied by its original labelled trade carton showing the manufacturer, product specification, pre-decimal price and receiving bakery.
An interesting item for collectors of Mothers Pride memorabilia, vintage advertising, bakery memorabilia, food packaging, British social history, ephemera or 1960s collectables.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
Sold as a historical/collectable item only and not suitable for food use.
