An artist's conception illustrates how an Air Force C-119 plucked the Discoverer 14 satellite capsule from the air over the Pacific Ocean. This month, Discoverer capsules 13 and 14 became the first objects recovered from orbit.
The trailing air recovery gear has just intercepted the General Electric-built capsule. The two poles suspended from the airplane held a rope to spread out to sweep up the capsule. The ends of the ropes are attached to a winch in the airplane. Upon impact with the capsule, the rope tore loose from the poles to tighten around the capsule securely before the winch reeled it in. Grappling hooks help hold the parachute lines.
The capsule was built by General Electric's Missile and Space Vehicle Department as part of the Lockheed Agena satellite.
