This is the break in the dike that caused destruction of the city, making 18,700 homeless and possibly killing many.
The destruction of Vanport, Oregon, on May 30, 1948, was caused by a catastrophic breach of a 200-foot section of a railroad embankment that was serving as a makeshift dike
