Up for your consideration is this rare antique French solid silver and niello vesta case / permanent match lighter, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870s–1880s.

This exceptional luxury smoking accessory is beautifully decorated throughout with an extremely fine geometric micro-cell pattern, creating an intricate lattice effect in silver over a contrasting dark niello ground. The decoration continues around virtually the entire body and lid, giving this small object a remarkably refined appearance.

The vesta features a spring-operated hinged lid with a deeply grooved match-striker surface integrated into the top. Beside the striker is a circular opening intended for the removable wick. A short silver safety chain is attached to the side.

The case is particularly interesting for its French silver hallmarks and prestigious Paris retailer's mark. It bears the French boar's-head (tête de sanglier) guarantee hallmark, used in Paris for small articles of solid silver of at least 800/1000 fineness, together with an “AL” maker's mark within a traditional French lozenge-shaped cartouche.

Most importantly, the inside of the lid is clearly stamped:

“LAURENT – Palais Royal 54”

This identifies the piece with Laurent at No. 54 Palais-Royal, Paris. During the 19th century, the celebrated arcades and galleries of the Palais-Royal were an important center of Parisian luxury commerce, occupied by specialist retailers offering jewelry, silverware and refined personal accessories. The Laurent name and the Palais Royal 54 address are also known from other French luxury silver objects of the period.

The combination of the Paris silver guarantee mark, AL maker's mark and Laurent retailer's stamp gives this unusual vesta a particularly attractive Parisian provenance and places it firmly within the tradition of fine French luxury accessories of the late 19th century.

The vesta is in very good antique condition considering its age of well over 100 years. There are some minor areas of wear/loss to the niello decoration on both sections. These imperfections are relatively insignificant to the overall appearance but are mentioned for accuracy. The spring-operated lid remains functional.
