GABRIELLE DESIGNS PHANTOM OF THE OPERA PADDINGTON BEAR

Description

An exceptionally unusual original Gabrielle Designs Paddington Bear dressed as The Phantom of the Opera, made in Doncaster, England, circa 1980.

The bear retains its original Gabrielle Designs woven manufacturer’s label carrying UK Registered Design No. 957892, confirming the Gabrielle origin.

Measuring approximately 37 cm high, Paddington is made from cream long-pile plush with inset orange-rimmed eyes and a moulded black nose.

He wears a dramatic Phantom of the Opera costume consisting of a black evening jacket and trousers, white shirt, white bow tie, broad red cummerbund, black theatrical hat, black cape with vivid red lining and a red rose to the lapel.

The costume appears entirely period and has never been removed. It is held in place with its plastic tags.

A highly unusual Gabrielle Designs Paddington and a much scarcer special-costume variation than the standard duffle-coated bears.

The original Gabrielle Designs woven label remains securely sewn to the rear.
