This engraving shows separate studies of the floral and fruit elements of Tragopogon (goat's beard): two flower heads in longitudinal and front view with their ligules visible, the involucre formed of linear bracts, as well as an elongated achene presented in longitudinal section. We can distinguish a feathery radial pappus, represented as a chair of filiform appendages facilitating dispersal by the wind, and isolated floral pieces highlighting the structure of the receptacle and the bracts. From a botanical point of view, the plate illustrates the typical characteristics of the Cichorieae: flower heads composed of ligulate flowers, indehiscent dried fruits (achenes or cypselae) provided with a well-developed pappus, this pappus being at the origin of the vernacular name "goat's beard" because of its silky and feathery appearance.
