Historic RPPC photo postcard. Shows the Spluga Pass ~ one of the most important Alpine passes, situated at an altitude of 2,115 meters above sea level on the national border between Italy (Province of Sondrio, Lombardy) and Switzerland (Canton of Grisons).

THIS postcard image had a special significance to the Italian soldiers who served in the Italian Alpini: an elite mountain infantry formed in 1872 to defend Italy's northern borders. During WWI, they fought the Austro-Hungarians in the "White War" (Guerra Bianca)—a brutal, high-altitude conflict across the Dolomites and Alps where avalanches and freezing temperatures were often deadlier than enemy fire.
