• ABOUT THIS TITLE:
• “A meditation on what it means to be a victim and a torturer at the same time. In his finest book to date, EVERETT combines in his narrator, Ishmael Kidder, a man pursued by furies (some of his own making—he had left his wife before his daughter was killed) and one who speaks with a cool sense of detachment…this is a book that not only makes you feel, but think.”
―Washington Post
• “PERCIVAL EVERETT, author of 20 books to date, may be too brainy for his own good. Like GILBERT SORRENTINO or STEVE ERICKSON—two names familiar to every admirer of innovative, contemporary literature—his fiction resonates clearly, but only on the lower frequencies, just outside of the mainstream, commercial-publishing establishment. That’s not necessarily a complaint, as it seems like most of the best books published recently have come from indie and university presses. When EVERETT holds his philosophical concepts in delicate balance with compelling storytelling, as in ERASURE and his new THE WATER CURE, he produces some of the most beautiful, erudite, and incendiary novels of our time…. One of our boldest and most uncompromising authors, EVERETT is less interested in giving readers what they want…than what he thinks they need.”
—POPMATTERS
• “THE WATER CURE (2007), PERCIVAL EVERETT’s latest published novel, is a complex and disturbing work….”
—ANNE-LAURE TISSUT, OPEN EDITIONS JOURNAL
• “PERCIVAL EVERETT—author, academic, fly fisherman, woodworker, painter, and mule trainer—has a talent for militant irony that feeds on variety and extremes. Refreshingly profane, his novels have nimbly led such sacred cows as African-American studies and Native American reparations to the abattoir.”
—BOOKFORUM
• “A psychologically harrowing and literarily provocative portrait of a mind unraveling from tragedy. Though the prolific EVERETT…has employed a variety of different narrative strategies, this first-person confession finds the novelist at his metafictional best…. There is wordplay that evokes JOYCE, CHAUCER and LEWIS CARROLL. There are philosophical debates between PLATO and SOCRATES. There are meditations on what ISHMAEL calls ‘the functions of language,’ the last of which he asserts is ‘to cause pain.’ For ISHMAEL, there is no escape from his mind in this novel. And none for the reader as well. Whether read as thriller or allegory, ISHMAEL’s fall from grace has a lacerating power.”
―KIRKUS REVIEWS

How We
GRADECONDITION
***********
DETAILS. The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.
FLAWS. All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized.
Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw.
It is also possible that we may miss some perfections!
Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.
GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):
VERY FINE or LIKE NEW
FINE (or EXCELLENT)
NEAR FINE (or NF)
VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+)
VERY GOOD (or VG)
GOOD
FAIR
ACCEPTABLE
POOR
“POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”
RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil!
(*Get it?)
POP QUIZ. Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math).
EXTRA VISUALS. Although we include multiple photographs in our listings, we usually have others we could share with you. (These extra photos also help to establish a paper-trial in the rare case that an item is damaged en route to you.)

UNITED STATES: In the USA, we ship books via MEDIA MAIL.
