An exceptionally appealing Victorian-era Baedeker travel guide to London, published more than 130 years ago.

The title page states that this edition was issued with 3 maps and 18 plans. The book contains wonderful folding maps, detailed plans of London landmarks and museums, street plans, railway information and extensive contemporary travel information.

One of the most interesting features is the separately bound/paginated "Index of Streets and Plans of London" section at the rear, containing additional detailed London street plans.

IMPORTANT PAGINATION NOTE:

This edition can initially appear to have missing pages because the main text ends at page 375 and is immediately followed by the separately paginated "Index of Streets and Plans of London," which begins its own pagination.

This is the correct construction of the 1894 Ninth Revised Edition. The main text properly concludes on page 375; pages 376 onward are not missing from this copy.

The book's printed List of Maps and Plans contains a reference to "Crystal Palace, p. 418," despite the main text of this edition ending at page 375. This appears to be an anomalous/carryover reference in the printed list rather than evidence of removed pages. We are noting it here specifically so there is no confusion regarding the unusual pagination.

MAPS / PLANS:

Maps and plans are present, including beautiful folding examples. One folding map has become detached and is loose in the book but is retained with the copy. Please see photographs.

PROVENANCE:

The front endpaper bears a wonderful period handwritten inscription:

"H. Austin Clark

Purchased at Paris

July 10, 1895"

The inscription dates to just one year after publication and adds wonderful period travel history to the book.

CONDITION:

Original red cloth boards with gilt lettering. Light exterior wear consistent with age. Pages show expected age toning and handling. One preliminary/map leaf has a tear as shown. One folding map is detached/loose but present. Binding otherwise presents nicely for its age.
