VINTAGE BRITISH TINPLATE TOY
METTOY MECHANICAL STREAMLINE TRAIN
Model No. 5710
Circa 1952 · Clockwork · Original Box · Working

A superb vintage Mettoy Mechanical Streamline Train set, model No. 5710, complete with its red lithographed tinplate clockwork locomotive, four-piece track and original illustrated box.

The unusual track consists of two straight sections and two large automatic turntables. The train travels along the track before engaging with the mechanism at each end, turning around and travelling back in the opposite direction.

The colourful lithographed track is particularly attractive, with printed rails, sleepers and foliage, while both turntables retain their original red centre guides and Mettoy branding. The surviving original box features the striking period “Mechanical Streamline Train” artwork and identifies the set as model No. 5710.

SET-UP & OPERATION

The set is working and will be shown operating in the listing video. On testing, one end of the track needs to be lifted slightly at times so that the train catches the turntable correctly.

The track can move slightly when used on a smooth hard surface, so a carpeted or other non-slip surface may provide a better base. The track sections are directional and only fit together correctly one way, so care should be taken when assembling them and they should not be forced together.

CONDITION

Playworn vintage condition with surface scratches, rubbing, marks and areas of paint loss to the locomotive and track. The clockwork mechanism is working and a video of the actual set operating will be uploaded.

When running, one end of the track needs to be lifted slightly at times so the train catches the turntable correctly. The original box has general age-related wear, marks, creasing and corner and edge wear.

Please examine all photographs and the operating video carefully, as these form an important part of the description and provide the best indication of condition and function.
