An attractive early 20th-century Chinese mah jong set, with bone-faced tiles decorated in red, green and blue. The designs include bird motifs, circular medallions, Chinese characters and illustrated bonus tiles, with Western numerals and letters accompanying many of the markings.
Housed in a reddish-brown wooden cabinet with five removable drawers, decorative metal mounts, twin carrying handles and a sliding front panel bearing green Chinese characters. Accompanied by scoring sticks, four dice in a small wooden container and a 1924 edition of The Pocket Guide to Mah Jong, published by Thos. De La Rue & Co. Ltd.
Tiles show age-related yellowing, surface marks and some discolouration, with wear to the coloured decoration. The cabinet has scratches, edge chips, splits and joint separation, with evidence of old glued repairs, particularly along one side. Metal fittings show tarnishing and wear.
All five drawers and the sliding front panel are present. The booklet has creasing, tears and tape repairs to the spine. Scoring sticks have not been individually counted.
