Pair of vintage hand-painted black velvet dog portraits depicting a Rottweiler and German Shepherd. Both are presented in carved wooden frames with coordinating geometric decoration. The Rottweiler is clearly signed “Ortiz,” while the German Shepherd bears a stylized painted signature. “Hecho en Mexico” is marked on the reverse of the Rottweiler frame.

Believed to date from approximately the 1970s. Each framed painting measures approximately 19 × 23 inches. The rich black velvet backgrounds, blue shading, bright eyes and dimensional painted highlights give both portraits a dramatic vintage appearance.

Condition: The Rottweiler displays well, with surface lint, small marks and age-related frame wear. The German Shepherd has a small but visible puncture/tear through the velvet in the painted tongue area, with some disturbance to the surrounding paint. Its reverse has a corresponding punctured area with brown discoloration or staining; the cause of the discoloration is unknown. The frames show scratches and finish wear consistent with age. The visible nails on the reverse are the mounting hardware securing the paintings to their frames.

No cleaning or restoration has been attempted. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up photographs of the German Shepherd’s tongue and reverse-side damage. Sold together as a vintage pair and in as-found condition.
