New Jersey ( colton , 1857)
map old, taken from the famous colton's General atlas ! By colton (New York JH colton And Company, No 172 William Street). 1857 edition, but earlier copyright. This atlas revolutionized the genre and its maps are extremely valuable testimonies to the history of the construction of the United States, at the time when this country began to take a definitive form. The cards of this edition are very sought after especially as they have the rare particularity of being devoid of the famous decorative borders typical of colton !!!
Entitled: “New Jersey". Original from 1857. Vintage hand colors. Map from the US state of New Jersey. With indication of the main railway lines, main roads and main towns. Each county in the state is highlighted by a different pastel color.
Dimensions: 36 x 43.5 cm (14 x 17 inches)
Completely good condition. The paper has a very beautiful patina and a beautiful grain. Possible defects of this board are: Wetness or humidity in the margins, some stains and possibly some small tears or tears on the periphery of the sheet. Condition fully compliant with standards and the main defects will be hidden by quality framing. Magnificent color and details typical of colton and the American spirit: Straight lines, reliefs, rivers, names, perspectives... Everything is done for a trip to 19th century America. Please look carefully at the photos to get as faithful a representation of the Map as possible. You buy what you see.
Joseph Hutchins colton , born in Longmeadow, Massachusetts on July 5, 1800 and died on July 29, 1893, known as JH colton , was an American geographer and cartographer. Born in the state of Massachusetts in 1800, he settled in New York in 1831 where he founded his company, JH colton & Company. He created railway maps, guides for immigrants, and atlases. His sons George Woolworth colton (1827 – 1901) and Charles B. colton (1832 – 1916) also collaborated in his business.
