Edited by W. E. Burton
New York: D. Appleton & Co., circa 1858

A handsome mid-19th-century compilation of American, Irish, Scottish, and English humorous writing, illustrated with engraved portrait plates and decorative title pages. The set retains its original-looking burgundy leather bindings with gilt-stamped and gilt-decorated spines.
Notable provenance: The Twentieth Century Club of Allegheny County
This set bears provenance from Pittsburgh’s historic Twentieth Century Club of Allegheny County. Founded in 1894, the women’s civic and cultural organization was created as a center for women’s thought, work, and action, with particular attention to literature, art, science, education, and philanthropy. Its early history records support for lectures, civic initiatives, and traveling libraries. The Club association gives these volumes a genuine local institutional history beyond their decorative and literary appeal. Club history
Please note that the Club marking establishes former library ownership. It does not indicate ownership by a specific club member.
Condition

Pages show age toning, spotting, and occasional stains consistent with age and institutional use. Engraved portrait illustration is present. Please study all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description. Sold as found.
