Ladies of the Canyon is one of Joni Mitchell’s most important early albums, recorded as she was moving beyond the relatively spare folk sound of Clouds toward the more sophisticated and adventurous music that would culminate in Blue and later albums.

The title refers to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles, where Mitchell was living among a community of musicians and artists. The album captures both the idealism of the late 1960s and Mitchell’s increasingly introspective songwriting.

Highlights

* “Big Yellow Taxi” – one of Mitchell’s best-known songs, with its environmental message and catchy melody.

For a Joni Mitchell collection, it’s essential. It sits at a fascinating point between her early folk albums and Blue. If you particularly enjoy the acoustic, intimate side of Mitchell, Ladies of the Canyon is arguably one of her best albums.

Interestingly, despite containing three hugely important songs—“Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock” and “The Circle Game”—the album can sometimes be overshadowed by Blue. It’s actually a very rewarding album to listen to from beginning to end.
