Wonderful vintage Strathmore 400 Series artist drawing pad containing a group of original hand-drawn figural studies, offered intact as found.

The pad appears to date from approximately the late 1960s–1970s and retains an old SMU Book Store price sticker of $2.05, giving it an especially nice period art-school / university studio character.

Inside are expressive original studies of the human figure executed primarily in charcoal and/or graphite. The drawings have a loose, confident academic life-drawing quality and are visually strong as a group.

One drawing appears to bear a signature that may read “Sha Silverman” or similar. The surname Silverman appears the clearest, but the artist has not been definitively identified, so attribution is left to the buyer.

An especially interesting historical note for collectors of artists’ materials: Roy Lichtenstein is documented as having worked in Strathmore 400 sketchbooks. A circa-1977 Strathmore 400 Sketchbook used by Lichtenstein is documented in the Roy Lichtenstein Catalogue Raisonné and represented in the collections of the Morgan Library & Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art.

This pad is NOT represented as being by Roy Lichtenstein and has no known connection to him. The reference is included solely because of the documented use of the same Strathmore 400 line by one of the major American artists of the 20th century.

The entire pad is being sold together rather than separating the individual drawings. This preserves the drawings in their original context and makes it an appealing vintage studio artifact in its own right.

CONDITION: Vintage used artist’s pad with expected age, handling, wear, toning, marks and imperfections to the covers and paper. Drawings vary in completion, as expected with working studio studies. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
