Original circa 1920 Fisherview World War I glass stereoview collection produced by Scientific Materials Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Includes 12 glass stereoscopic photographic slides along with the original Fisherview storage box.

Fisherview produced its World War I images as transparent glass stereoviews intended to be viewed through the company’s Fisherview stereoscope. The complete WWI series consisted of 72 views, issued in groups of 12. Each plate contains a matched pair of photographs creating a three dimensional image when viewed through the proper stereoscope.

This group contains a particularly interesting assortment of WWI subjects photographed in France, including battlefields, military transportation, artillery and war damage. Clearly readable captions represented in the lot include “German graves in France,” “Officer’s automobile destroyed by German machine gun fire,” “The ruined Cathedral at Albert, France,” and “Troops being transported during the battle of Verdun.” Additional scenes are shown in the photos.

The plates retain their original Fisherview markings, Scientific Materials Co. Pittsburgh PA identification, individual series numbers and printed captions.

All 12 glass plates are shown in the photographs. The original box has substantial age and storage wear including surface loss to the black exterior, scuffing and wear around the edges and corners. Please examine the individual illuminated photographs carefully for the condition of each glass stereoview.

A scarce surviving group of early three dimensional photographic documentation of World War I, especially desirable with the original Fisherview box.
