Programme for the premiere production in the UK of
Thomas Russell Sullivan's adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel “Dr
Jekyll & Mr Hyde” which opened at the Lyceum Theatre in London on 4 August
1888, where it played until late September. Although this
programme is undated, it must have been produced after 17 September when a new curtain-raiser,
“Lesbia”, was added to the bill. Although most of the J&H original cast
were still in place including Richard Mansfield in the dual title roles,
three actors had been replaced: Mrs Sol- Smith was now playing Mrs Lanyon, Mr
Crompton was Sir Danvers and Miss Glidden played Rebecca. Beatrice Cameron
played both Agnes Carew and the title role in “Lesbia”. The four-sided 6.5” by
8.5” programme is in fair condition with some creasing and minor splits to the
edges.
