The first public performance in the UK of Oscar Wilde's play “Salomé” was not until 5 October 1931 when it opened at the Savoy Theatre and then transferred quickly to the Duke of York's Theatre (where this programme was sold). There were only 12 performances out of a total of 30 At the second venue, making this a very rare programme.  Joan Maude, playing the title role, appears on the cover. Inside are photographs of Austin Trevor who played Jokanaan and Robert Farquharson who played Herod (as indeed he had done in the unlicenced British premiere in 1905!). The play was produced by Nancy Price, who played Herodias and whose picture also appears in the programme. Robert Donat, before he became a screen actor, played Young Syrian. The 5.5” by 8.5” programme has 16 pages and is in fair condition. There are some light marks on the cover and the price sticker has been completely removed. There are short splits to the spine and the outer covers are loose. An important addition to any collection of Oscar Wilde programmes.
