A little bit of history: Japanese woodblock prints, primarily known as Ukiyo-e (pictures of the "floating world"), are iconic works that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries during the Edo Period. Capturing the culture of urban life, landscapes, folklore, and entertainment, their bold compositions and flattened perspectives heavily influenced the Impressionist movement in Europe.
The Core Process
Traditional woodblock printing is a collaborative craft involving four roles: the publisher, the artist, the woodblock carver, and the printer.
  • Design: The artist creates the initial ink drawing.
  • Carving: The carver pastes the design onto a cherry wood block and cuts away the blank areas to leave the lines raised.
  • Printing: The printer applies water-based pigments and starch paste, pressing the paper by hand. Multi-color prints require multiple woodblocks perfectly aligned using specialized marks called kento.
  • This print is a reproduction of an original woodblock print. It will add a touch of artistry and culture to your space. Unframed.

Removing Wrinkles From Rolled Canvas Prints

On rare occasions canvas prints can be wrinkled from packaging and shipping.

Canvas is a bit more forgiving than paper, but it still requires special care to get those creases out. If the crease is minor, try using a hair dryer on the low heat setting to warm up the back of the canvas to help it relax. Gently press down on the creased area with your hand to help smooth it out.

For more stubborn creases, you can try using a bit of steam. Hold a steam iron about 6 inches from the back of the creased area and move it back and forth until you start to see steam. Then, gently press down on the crease with your hand to help smooth it out. Just be careful not to get the iron too close, as too much heat can damage the canvas.

Another solution is to use a roller to help flatten out the creased area. You can use a wallpaper roller or a rolling pin to apply gentle pressure to the wrinkled area. To get the curl out of a rolled canvas simply drape it over a chair and allow gravity to straighten it out.
