This is a beautiful, authentic late 19th to early 20th-century (Meiji Period) Japanese lacquerware keepsake box with an intricate shape including a rounded edge lid. It is an exquisite piece! 

Artistry & Technique:

The lid features a beautifully executed, raised gold maki-e and polychrome landscape scene depicting a majestic Mount Fuji rising over a lake flanked by traditional travelers near the shore. Horizontal lines close to the shore are not scratches but ripples or currents in the water. The craftsmanship showcases fine line work and varied metallic textures.

Interior Details: Opening the box reveals a gorgeous rich, densely packed nashiji (pear-skin lacquer) finish on the interiors of both the lid and base. Irregular gold/silver metallic flakes are suspended beneath a rich, glowing translucent red urushi lacquer layer—a definitive hallmark of luxury Japanese export art from this era.

Form & Construction:The box measures approximately 9” x 6” x 1.5” and features elegant, scalloped/contoured sides that serve as both a decorative silhouette and an ergonomic finger grip to smoothly separate the lid from the base.

Condition: Good Antique condition. Shows minor, honest age-related surface wear, light scuffs, and small lacquer imperfections consistent with a genuine Meiji-era piece.
