This basket comes with this provenance: sold at a  Cowan Auction in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2010 ~listed as a Yokut Bottleneck in the auction and valued at $ 8-11,000 ~ originally owned by Carolbeth Laird and her husband , George Laird, a Chemehuevi Indian who lived on the Colorado River Indian Reservation~ He was her second husband~ her first husband was linguist, an anthropologist, John P Harrington~ Carolbeth ( 1895 to 1983 ) was herself, an American ethnographer, and linguist ~the basket was listed as a "Yukut burial or crematory jar basket"  in the auction~ My research shows this basket to be Foothill Yokuts (  Sierra Nevada foothills around Fresno Mendota and Madero in California)~ It has Red Bud, black dyed root of bracken fern,  sedge root for weft materials , and deer grass bundle for foundation~very tight bottom start left a "pin hole"  opening on the bottom~ A right work direction, clipped, fag ends and plain wrapped self rim~The basket is in very fine condition except for missing quail top knots~ there are 10 present though~ it has 5 bands of rattlesnake designs beautifully woven~it is 4.5 inches tall, 7 inches across the shoulders, with a 4 inch  opening on the top.
