Welcome to VDG Militaria

We are a small family business based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, passionate about preserving history through authentic military artifacts. Established in 2014, every item in our store has a story to tell, connecting you to a meaningful piece of the past.

Item Description

Item

An original WWII U.S. M1 helmet liner, high-pressure type, maker-marked in the dome by CAPAC (Capac Manufacturing Company). It retains its complete suspension: the herringbone-twill cotton webbing, the leather sweatband, the leather nape strap, and the web chin strap. At present the liner wears a postwar VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) ceremonial finish, painted white with the VFW Cross of Malta decal on the front, the way VFW posts turned surplus liners into honor-guard and parade headgear.

The shell interior shows the marbled brown-and-olive swirl of a genuine WWII high-pressure liner. It carries honest age and its ceremonial-service history: the white repaint over the original olive exterior, the applied VFW decal with some loss, a few drilled holes from the parade hardware, and cracking and wear to the leather sweatband and nape strap. The shell is solid and the suspension is complete.

Maker & Date

The dome is stamped with the CAPAC maker's logo, found beneath the cord where the web straps cross. CAPAC produced M1 liners in two periods, WWII (1942–43) and the Korean War (1951). This example's marbled high-pressure shell, its herringbone-twill suspension with "A" washers, and its leather nape strap and sweatband are all the wartime configuration, which places it in CAPAC's 1942–43 WWII production rather than the later Korean run. Liners were not individually date-stamped, so the year range is read from the maker and the construction.

Why this is a great restoration project

This is exactly what an M1 restorer wants: a genuine, correctly maker-marked WWII CAPAC high-pressure liner with a complete original suspension, currently in an easily reversed ceremonial finish. The usual path is to carefully strip the white paint and remove the VFW decal from the exterior, then bring the liner back to its original olive drab wartime configuration to pair with a WWII steel shell. Because the shell and suspension are wartime, it restores back to a correct World War II liner rather than a common late example, which is what makes it worth the bench time.

History

The M1 helmet liner was the inner shell that held the suspension and did the real work of fitting the helmet to the soldier's head. High-pressure liners like this CAPAC went to war on American heads across every theater of the Second World War. After their service life, countless surplus liners were repurposed by veterans' organizations such as the VFW, painted white and decaled for post honor guards to wear at parades, funerals, and memorial services, which is the chapter this liner passed through before reaching the restoration bench.
