Up for sale is a rare and highly decorative Polish Mid-Century Modern modernist playing card box, produced by the renowned ORNO Artistic Handcraft Cooperative, Warsaw, Poland, ca.1950s.

The box is beautifully crafted from polished wood with a warm reddish-brown finish and softly rounded modernist forms. The removable lid reveals an wooden interior divided into two separate compartments designed to accommodate two decks of playing cards.

The most striking feature is the large hand-crafted metal appliqué decorating the front. It is executed with pierced, cut and textured details in a strongly stylized geometric and organic composition, characteristic of the distinctive artistic metalwork associated with early ORNO production. Two rounded metal studs complete the front decoration.

The metalwork is clearly marked with the characteristic OR/NO mark in a divided square, identifying the ORNO cooperative in Warsaw. Above the ORNO mark is an additional individual graphic craftsman's mark (gmerk), a particularly interesting feature associated with ORNO's earlier production. 

Founded in Warsaw in 1949, ORNO became one of the important names in post-war Polish applied arts, particularly celebrated for its original modernist designs and individually hand-crafted metalwork.

Condition: The box is in very good vintage condition, retaining an attractive age-related patina and minor signs of use consistent with its age. Please review all photos carefully, as they are an important part of the item description.
