Long story short, I was gifted a chest of vintage Barbie dolls and outfits. Some of the components of the ensembles were lost, some pieces fell victim to rough play and/or the ravages of time. Everything needed freshening up and there were some blanks to fill in in most cases. In the process of sorting them, I marveled at the amazing quality of that first decade of Barbie fashions. I wanted to “do them proud” and make them complete ensembles again, so I did.
This emerald green outfit was one of Mattel’s bolder color choices, ensuring that Barbie would be part of the show if she wore it to the theater. It features an emerald green satin sheath skirt, a wide-collared bolero jacket, a pillbox hat with a bow, a sleeveless white blouse, and open-toe green heels, commonly referred to as “mules.”
There wasn’t a great deal I had to do to refresh this outfit but the skirt needed laundering and everything needed pressing. The jacket came back to life with a vengeance. It frames Barbie’s face like it was always meant to. I added the purse, the beaded stretch bracelet that holds it on her wrist, a rainbow cellphone held on the wrist with one of three white stretchy o-rings, and I made her opera glasses from a drama mask charm.
The doll is included. I acquired her second hand so she may have seen some play time. Doesn’t look it though. She had a nice spa day and some down time before being tasked to take this classic 60’s outfit back out into The Real World.
Everything comes from a non-smoking, Barbie-loving home where déjà vu is a real thing.
