The CSA Constitution consisted of five vellum sheets pasted
together at over 12' long and rolled, signed by Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana,
Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas (these 7 states, soon after, grew to 11).
This manuscript was part of a wagonload of boxes discovered
at the railroad station in Chester, South Carolina in April of 1865 by a
newspaper war correspondent. The boxes, which had been abandoned by fleeing
troops, contained the records of the Confederate government, which were being
sent South after the evacuation of Richmond. Among the records recovered were
the two Constitutions of the Confederacy, Provisional and Permanent.
He sold the ‘Provisional Constitution’ at auction in New York in 1883 which is
now in the American Civil War Museum in Richmond. He sold the ‘Permanent
Constitution’ to DeRenne Family in July 1883 where they sold it to The
University of Georgia in 1939.
Confederate currency was issued by the Confederate States of
America during the Civil War (1861 – 1865) to finance the war effort and assert
sovereignty. The first series, known as the "Montgomery Issue," was
authorized in March 1861 and circulated shortly after, featuring denominations
from $50 to $1,000 and initially backed by gold and silver deposits. Over the
war, 70–72 different series were issued, with designs ranging from portraits of
historical figures to allegorical images, trains, ships, and depictions of enslaved
people. As the war progressed, the notes lost backing by precious metals and
were ultimately redeemable only by a promise of post-war payment, which never
materialized, rendering them worthless as currency after the Confederacy's
defeat.
Denominations: 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100,
$500, $1,000
Printing: Notes were often printed on rice paper or other
available materials, hand-signed, and hand-cut, leading to irregular edges.
Designs: Included Confederate leaders, allegorical figures,
and local scenes; some notes were printed by state or local banks - adding
variety.
Counterfeits: Both Northern and Southern counterfeit notes
circulated, making authentication important for collectors.
