Long story short, I was gifted a chest of vintage Barbie dolls and outfits. Some of the components of the ensembles were lost, some pieces fell victim to rough play and/or the ravages of time. Everything needed freshening up and there were some blanks to fill in in most cases. In the process of sorting them, I marveled at the amazing quality of that first decade of Barbie fashions. I wanted to “do them proud” and make them complete ensembles again, so I did.

Because this ensemble came with heeled slippers, I chose a Barbie Fashionista with arched feet to wear this look. Basically, to bring this sleep set back to life, I fixed some issues and added some stuff. Read on.

Like most of the Nighty Negligee nightgowns out there, the elastic that holds it up was shot, so I gathered it back up and sewed it to a new strip of elastic. We can’t be exposing Barbie’s tah tahs, now can we. I also put a new pink silk rose on the bodice where there used to be a floral appliqué and I had to shorten the cords that could be wrapped around the bodice because one end had frayed. The dab of Fray Check I used should keep this from happening again, but note that the cord is shorter than the original. And I gave her panties. They aren’t the best-made panties, but they do the job. One of her slippers was missing its pink pom pom, so I took off the other one and used new pink pom poms. The felt dog didn’t need any work. I put together a tote filled with toiletries for her, along with a mirror, brush and comb. The white land-line phone came with another 60’s Barbie ensemble (“Busy Morning”) but seemed to make more sense with an outfit that was for staying home, and I threw in a book for Barbie to read in bed if Ken is hangin’ with his bros tonight. His loss. I named this remake "Bedtime."

The Fashionista Barbie is included. She has exaggerated fingers and appears to be showing off the ring on her right finger. Not sure why. And even after treating her hair, though much better than it was, it is still a little bit sticky. Consider it "bed head."

Everything comes from a non-smoking, Barbie-loving home where déjà vu is a real thing.
