Long story short, I was gifted a chest of vintage Barbie dolls and outfits. Some of the components of the ensembles were lost, some pieces fell victim to rough play and/or the ravages of time. Everything needed freshening up and there were some blanks to fill in in most cases. In the process of sorting them, I marveled at the amazing quality of that first decade of Barbie fashions. I wanted to “do them proud” and make them complete ensembles again, so I did.

This outfit sure takes me back. My mom had outfits just like this. The collared blouse stays tucked into the matching slacks because it functions like a baby’s onesie. Mattel left it up to us to accessorize it, and 60 years later, I did exactly that, adding a black motorcycle jacket, snakeskin belt and purse, beaded stretch bracelet, orange low heels, and a cellphone. I assigned the new ensemble with the name "Outward Bound."

The Asha doll is included. She is the 1992 Shaní Beach Streak Asha. The earrings are original to the doll. I gave her a braid to show off her beach streaks. I acquired  her second hand, and like all the new girls on their arrival here, she had a spa day before settling in and waiting for her clothing assignment. She has the 90’s Twist ‘n Turn waist, bendable knees and arched feet. There is a dark spot on the back of her right leg and on the right leg of the slacks. I did not try to remove.

Everything comes from a non-smoking, Barbie-loving home where déjà vu is a real thing.
