Long story short, I was gifted a chest of vintage Barbie dolls and outfits. Some of the components of the ensembles were lost, some pieces fell victim to rough play and/or the ravages of time. Everything needed freshening up and there were some blanks to fill in in most cases. In the process of sorting them, I marveled at the amazing quality of that first decade of Barbie fashions. I wanted to “do them proud” and make them complete ensembles again, so I did.

I chose a Millie face Barbie with flat feet to wear this look, which when I started was just a blue corduroy jumper with some whimsical felt appliques. Now it is an updated look I named “Friday Night Date Revival.”

I actually had two of these jumpers, both missing their petticoat. One jumper washed up pretty well, the other not so much. Because the jumper is open at the bust and in the back, I added sleeveless tee and a white pencil skirt to keep our girl from getting hooted at by construction workers. From there, I added a faux-leather belt and a coordinating purse embellished with the felt appliques from the other jumper, and harvested one of the shoulder straps from the sacrificed jumper to make a hair accessory. Then came the nurse shoes, white hoop earrings, and a bluebird cellphone.

The Millie Barbie is included. I acquired her second hand so she has likely seen some play time but I don’t see any flaws. Her limbs do not flex, not even a little, but her right arm is posed.

Everything comes from a non-smoking, Barbie-loving home where déjà vu is a real thing.
