Two large-format glass negatives dating from approximately 1890-1905, featuring the grape harvest in Almeria, Andalusia. The plates are the traditional half-plate format, measuring approximately 16.5cm x 12cm.
Both photographs are visually striking. Bearing in mind the cost, bulk and relatively slow working methods of photographic equipment of the period, the subjects were most likely posed to some degree rather than being candid photographs in the modern sense.
The positive images shown in the listing have, of course, been reversed from the original negative plates. I scanned each plate in sections using a medium-format scanner and the sections were digitally stitched together. There is almost certainly still more detail to be extracted using a scanner capable of taking an entire half-plate negative in one pass, but the present scans already demonstrate the remarkable amount of information contained in the original glass plates.
Both negatives are retained in protective sleeves and carry handwritten contemporary-style descriptions:

The photographs provide an unusually detailed record of grape harvesting and packing in southern Spain at the end of the nineteenth century, including workers, agricultural equipment, barrels, crates, weighing scales, donkeys, clothing and the working environment of the vineyard itself.
The plates will be packed very carefully for shipping, with each protected between rigid layers before being placed inside a larger box with substantial cushioning.

Ambas fotografías son visualmente muy llamativas. Teniendo en cuenta el coste, el volumen y los métodos de trabajo relativamente lentos del equipo fotográfico de la época, es muy probable que las escenas estuvieran preparadas o posadas en cierta medida, en lugar de tratarse de fotografías espontáneas en el sentido moderno.
Las imágenes positivas que aparecen en el anuncio han sido, naturalmente, invertidas a partir de las placas negativas originales. Cada placa fue escaneada por secciones con un escáner de formato medio y posteriormente las distintas partes fueron unidas digitalmente. Casi con toda seguridad podría obtenerse aún más detalle utilizando un escáner capaz de digitalizar una placa completa de una sola vez, pero los escaneos actuales ya muestran la extraordinaria cantidad de información conservada en los negativos originales.

Las fotografías constituyen un registro excepcionalmente detallado de la vendimia y del embalaje de uvas en el sur de España a finales del siglo XIX, mostrando trabajadores, utensilios agrícolas, barriles, cajas, balanzas, burros, vestimenta y el propio entorno de trabajo del viñedo.
Las placas serán embaladas con especial cuidado para el envío, protegidas individualmente entre capas rígidas y colocadas posteriormente dentro de una caja de mayor tamaño con abundante material de amortiguación.
