On
offer is a pair of genuine Victorian horse martingale brass badges.
They are mounted on a leather backing, which would then be attached
to the harness straps of a horse. Items
such as these were typically used between 1837 and 1901 by British
cavalry or mounted infantry officers. Please take a good look
at the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Each
of the items measures an overall length of 20.5cm, and 7.5cm across
at the widest part. The brass medallion is about 9.5cm x 4.5cm.
The
brass depicts a Royal Household Cavalry badge of a Queen Victoria
crown set within the Order of the Garter strap. This is surrounded by
the wording "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (Shame Be To Him
Who Thinks Evil Of It). A Victorian crown surmounts the strap.
These
are not perfect as they have seen some military use. There are signs
of wear and tear commensurate with age and use. The brasses have been
polished, and some old polish remains. The leather backings are a bit
rubbed and worn, and the surfaces are scuffed and rippled as the
pictures show. The stitching all looks pretty good though.
Despite
the cosmetic faults these are lovely Victorian items. They display
well, and will make superb additions to any collection.
