1945 Original Press Photo by ACME WAR PHOTOGRAPHER ANDREW LOPEZ.
Northern Luzon, Philippines.
A soldier of the United States 32nd Division surveys the litter of Japanese slain by the 32nd Division troops as they tried to defend the Congo Fortress on the Villa Verde Trail in Northern Luzon.
The fortress, a maze of caves atop the 5,000-foot-high mountain, ran over 100 feet in length and was constructed with living quarters, including a kitchen and bunks. Capture of this fortress proved to be the key to the problem of cutting off the Japanese dug in that area.

PHOTOGRAPHER ANDREW LOPEZ WON THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY IN 1960.
