For your consideration is a custom-built bassoon reed micrometer and dial indicator thickness gauge. Designed for use in bassoon reed making, this specialized bench tool allows a reed maker to compare cane thickness at different points across a finished reed.

The gauge features an analog dial indicator graduated in .001-inch increments, a thin measuring tongue intended to fit between the reed blades, an adjustable brass support assembly, and a finished hardwood base with felt feet. The various adjustment points allow the measuring tongue and indicator contact point to be positioned as needed.

This appears to be a privately or custom-made tool, and no manufacturer’s name or model designation could be found. Its precise history and original builder are unknown.

The dial responds to movement and returns to zero, but its calibration and measurement accuracy have not been independently verified. Due to its custom construction, we cannot guarantee that its readings conform to a particular manufacturer’s specifications. It is therefore being offered as pictured and should be checked or calibrated by its new owner before being relied upon for precision measurements.

The assembly remains in good overall cosmetic condition, showing some light surface wear, wood wear, handling marks, and natural patina consistent with previous use. Please review all photographs carefully for a complete representation of its design and condition.

An interesting and potentially useful custom reed-making tool for the bassoonist, double-reed specialist, or instrument technician looking to monitor and compare reed thickness during the finishing process. Would perhaps make for a great tool as is or a great bargain for a parts lot to assemble a new setup.
